From Innocence to Empowerment: Ending Child Marriage in India

Oct 1, 2023

Child marriage is a grave infringement of human rights, casting shadows over the lives of young girls. In this blog, we aim to bring attention to the gravity of this practice and advocate for its eradication. This unjust practice not only stifles women’s right to express themselves and hinders their development and education but also jeopardises their well-being and health. The high likelihood of child brides becoming teenage mothers contributes to a grave statistic, where pregnancy complications claim many adolescent girls’ lives. Child marriage perpetuates a vicious cycle of disadvantage and flagrant violations of girls’ rights. It obstructs their access to education and healthcare, leaving them vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections and subjecting them to various other forms of violence. Poverty and gender inequality emerge as prominent factors driving child marriage, with girls with limited educational opportunities often at higher risk. While concerted efforts and increased investments in girls’ education and awareness initiatives have prevented millions of child marriages, economic hardships, deep-rooted social and cultural norms, and the fear of societal judgment surrounding pregnancies outside of marriage continue to fuel this inhumane practice. Addressing the plight of child marriage requires persistent and collective action to protect the rights and well-being of children, especially girls. Governments, organisations, and communities must collaborate to tackle the underlying factors contributing to this issue. This includes promoting gender equality, enhancing access to education, and creating opportunities for girls to thrive. Breaking the cycle of child marriage demands an unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights of children and ensuring a brighter future, free from the chains of this harmful practice. Together, we can work towards a world where every child is granted the opportunity to grow, learn, and realise their full potential. Let us raise our voices and take action to end child marriage, paving the way for a more equitable and just society.

With an academic background in sociology and public policy, I have always been driven to gender-based issues. Through academic engagement, such as research projects and case study evaluations, I have explored various dimensions of gender-based violence, as well as issues of social exclusion and poverty. These experiences have deepened my understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized communities, particularly women. Apart from academic engagement, internships have provided me with valuable hands-on experience, allowing me to witness the real-world impact of these issues. Motivated by these experiences, I am passionate about contributing more towards women's emancipation. I believe in the power of education, advocacy, and creating inclusive spaces for dialogue.
