Feminism, often misinterpreted and obscured by fear, does not oppose men but instead an endeavour for freedom and equality for all individuals. This includes acknowledging and questioning gender stereotypes and institutionalised structural discrimination that exist at different levels of society.
Feminism in India has a long-standing tradition based on advocating for rights and eliminating gender-biased practices such as, Sati and Child marriage. It has evolved over time to address a broader range of issues, including the public and private spaces as gendered domains, the burden of reproductive and productive labour, workplace hierarchies, and the intersectionality of identities.
Importantly, feminism does not restrict solely to women; it encompasses the struggle for equality, integrity, and the freedom of choice for all disadvantaged community, encompassing LGBTQ individuals, non-binary individuals, and various anti-hegemonic communities.
The collective movement is aimed at reaching a just society where privilege is acknowledged and the disadvantaged challenge their marginalisation. By embracing the essence of feminism, we pave the way for a future where speaking proudly of being a feminist is no longer a cause for fear or hesitation. United, we have the power to shape the globe with equality and freedom thrive.
