NaariSamata is a charity whose mission to empower equality and advocate for change beagin in 2021. In the last three years, NaariSamata which sits on the shoulders of volunteers who wholeheartedly put their passions and talents together to support this worthy cause. As the charity has grown it has given a voice to women and children and provided a safe place for people to educate themselves on issues around the world. Beginning with only three sponsored girls in India, NaariSamata has come an exceptional way to now sponsor the eduation for thirteen after two years.
One of which is 8-year-old Priya who lives with her parents and four siblings. Priya’s mother is a domestic helper who works hard to support her family, but her best efforts were matched by her partner’s alcoholism and unemployment. Priya came to us via our implementation partner, Pratigya, who are a major player in the Jharkhand education sector*. Priya is one of four girls sponsored by the Stanley Group, all of whom are benefiting greatly from this investment into their lives. Many children are recommended to us by known contacts in India including other charities and schools. There are many families, like Priya’s, that are unable to pay the fees after the loss of a parent, which combined with the school fees increasing is leaving many asking for help.
In Priya’s area, there is an English Medium school that teaches art, karate, and computer skills. The school also fosters a welcoming community for the children to feel safe in their development and learning. Due to the financial bracket of Priya’s family and the fact that this is a fee-paying school, Priya has watched on with hope as her friends began to attend. Despite feeling left behind, Priya listened to the stories of their experiences at school and they sparked her imagination about what it would be like for her to attend one day. Priya is one of the girls that NaariSamata has sponsored, and upon hearing the news of her admission, she was overwhelmed with joy to join her friends and look to a future that she had only dreamt of in the past.
Since beginning her time at the English Medium School, Priya has shared with us her fondness for the community learning center and is surrounded by her friends. Despite her youth, she also spoke about the impact this opportunity has had on her family as her mother and father have attended parent’s meetings and received home visits to improve the impact of her father’s habits on the family in their home life.
